Academies
Participants receive five (5) weeks of instruction in university-level courses selected from the natural and computer sciences as well as the social sciences and humanities. The courses emphasize time management, collaborative learning and problem solving. The important elements of effective leadership and community service are emphasized across the curriculum. Classes meet Monday through Friday, with each class meeting every other day for 120 minutes. Students are in class from 8:00am to 4:30pm each day except on Friday. Fridays are reserved for field trips and test prep. The average class size is twelve (12) students.
Business Academy
An aim of the DuBois Business Academy is to cultivate entrepreneur and business management skills in students with a high interest in and an aptitude for leadership in the private sector. The curriculum stresses ethical business practices and community service. In this way, the Academy endeavors to create a cadre of successful entrepreneurs guided by a strong sense of social responsibility. The business courses offered to students enrolled in this Academy are:
- Introduction to Economics
- Business and Marketing Strategies
- Business Principles and Issues

Leadership Academy
The DuBois Leadership Academy aims to nurture the development of leaders/scholars in the social sciences and humanities. The 2008 curriculum included courses on social problems, public policy, and social theory. Self-knowledge, analytical thinking, and cooperative problem-solving were emphasized in classes. Clear, thorough, and effective analytical thinking was consistently reinforced in classes. In addition to the core curriculum, participants completed the following courses:
- Seminar on W.E.B. DuBois
- Race and Social Stratification
- Public Speaking

Talented Tenth Academy
The Talented Tenth Academy provides advanced training aimed to refine the leadership and scholarship skills of participants. It includes second-year DuBois Scholars who fulfilled requirements in one of the previously referenced academies. Courses acquaint students with various models for addressing local, national, and international social issues. Students examine various leadership and conflict management strategies. There were 14 students enrolled in the 2008 Talented Tenth Academy. The curriculum consisted of the following courses:
- Logic and Conflict Resolution
- Philosophic Logic
- Scientific Inquiry
- Leadership Topologies
- Communication in Professional Settings
- Psychology of African-American Life

Pre-Med Neuroscience Academy
The restructuring of the science academy to the Pre-Med Neuroscience Academy is a step towards an overall restructuring of the Institute from Academies to Schools with the Pre-Med Neuroscience Academy being apart of the School of Allied Science. The DuBois Pre-Med Neuroscience Academy aims to facilitate the development of a cohort of well-rounded scientists and researchers in the traditional fields of science, medicine, and information driven technology. The curriculum emphasizes the interconnectedness between scientific, mathematic, and technological problem-solving strategies in a variety of situations. The Pre-Med/Neuroscience Academy was the largest Academy in the Institute. The science curriculum included the following courses:
- Biological Engineering
- Developmental Biology
- Mathematical Modeling.

Shell Oil Engineering Academy
The DuBois Engineering Academy aims to stimulate interest among participants in careers in Engineering. The 2008 curriculum included courses on advanced math and physics principles. These courses incorporated analytical thinking, and cooperative problem-solving strategies. In addition to the core curriculum, participants completed the following courses:
- Physics
- Developmental Biology
- Mathematical Reasoning

Fellows Mentoring Academy
First introduced in 1991, the W.E.B DuBois Fellows Mentoring Academy is a nonresidential/residential honors program offered by the W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute for high-achieving students entering ninth grade. This Academy was reactivated in summer 2007. The curriculum is designed to develop effective writing skills, study habits, and logic as well as mathematics and science skills. Cooperation and collective problem solving are highlighted in all courses. The development of analytical skills is emphasized across the curriculum. The curriculum consisted of the following courses:
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Logic and problem Solving
- Writing Effective Prose
- Applications of Science

Junior Achievers Academy
First introduced in the summer of 2008, the W.E.B DuBois Junior Achievers Academy is a nonresidential/residential honors program offered by the W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute for high-achieving students entering eighth grade. The curriculum is designed to maintain interest and focus on scholarship of participants and strengthen their self-esteem. Cooperation and collective problem solving are highlighted in all courses. The concrete and practical problem solving excercises is emphasized across the curriculum. The curriculum consisted of the following courses:
- Mathematical Logic
- Functions of Government
- Writing Effective Prose
- African American Issues
